Stuart sorry Ray - hindsight is easy and no-one other than possibly South Korea took any immediate response to Chinese scientists warnings of the possible outcomes.
Horton wants a platform (because he isnt inside the tent...) which is why he is singling out the UK for his opprobrium rather than all other governments or more importantly WHO.
Of course he is right that we perhaps could/should have listened and acted accordingly but we went with the global consensus at the time and followed the guidance of WHO (at least in part). That is clearly a lesson that must be applied for the next one; because there most certainly will be a next one...
But all that is in the past and the important things are surely to recognise that here in the UK through a variety of agencies and actors we are progressively applying more stringent measures well ahead of other countries relative to the progression of the pandemic and for individuals to act responsibly (dont panic buy, avoid high risk situations/follow social distancing guidelines, self isolate as required based on symptoms etc.)
