If we must teach religion in schools then my suggestion would be to broaden out the subject to include other belief-systems of a non-rational sort and rename it 'Supernatural Studies'. That way not only would all religions be covered, but it would bring into the curriculum such currently neglected fields as faeries, elves, ghosts, dragons, mermaids and little green men. Admittedly there are no founding texts of, say, faery or dragonology to study (though there are many faery commentaries by, e.g., Conan Doyle, and plenty of 'here be dragons' maps), and the level of violence attributable to my suggested inclusions isn't comparable to that perpetrated in the name of religion, and the sexual perversions of elves pale in comparison to those of priests. Nevertheless, the political, economic and cultural effects of fantastic thought are all about us. And it could help to raise the profile of ghosts and little green men who, after all, are under-represented in many areas of public life.
