"Proposal for a New Harbour at Dover" by Vincenzo Volpe (painting)

This watercolour by Vincenzo Volpe (Henry VIII's painter) is a representation of a proposed changes to Dover Harbour to alleviate problems caused from silting up and the risk from storms. It was commissioned by Dover Corporation for presentation to the King and shows ideas for a new harbour behind the shoreline. The proposed works were never carried out and it was over 50 years before an alternative scheme was completed.

The original painting is held in the Cotton Manuscripts collection at the British Library.
