I went for one of my walks today in the wonderful weather. Whilst walking back along the cliffs, I know Dover has its problems, but it also has so many things that are good.
So what are your top three?
Mine are:
1. You are never more than 15 minutes walk from the countryside, a park or the sea. (That is at my walking speed!)
2. It's probably one of the most historic towns in the UK.
3. Great schools (I'm biased on this one because both my children are going through Dover schools).
I know the list would be longer of what's wrong with the town, and let's not critique each others top 3 because with a bright weekend ahead, let's be positive!

●The Castle has to be top of my list.
Not just the castle in itself, but that it can be seen from almost everywhere in the town. I think many locals take it for granted (or are just so used to it being in the background they tend not to notice) but I always feel a sense of home when I see it after being away, even if only for a day or two.
●The countryside.
Growing up in Dover was like a giant adventure playground, with the cliffs, the beach, the tunnels (on all sides of the valley), the woods and the fields, we would walk for mile upon mile and come home absolutely shattered and normally filthy.
●The people.
There is much derision of the worst, but the vast majority are friendly, helpful and very community orientated. The stories from my mother and her family, of their youth always hearten me.

My lifelong love of the sea and the hills stems from an early childhood spent in Dover and, though I've lived all over the country, I have always chosen to settle close to the hills or sea shore. Plum Pudding Hill (Whinless Down) loomed large over our house and I was delighted to return there during my Recent Visit last October and find it a nature reserve. Memories of roaming its flanks with friends, unfettered by adult concerns, are still strong.
The fabulous setting of your town is enhanced by the strong sense of history felt on its streets and in its wild places, due in no small part to the magnificent castle towering over it. You all clearly care so much about this special place.

I agree with all the previous comments, especially the complete strangers I have met in the past at various times who were so friendly, helpful and kind when I fell or now offer to get things when I am out shopping on my mobility scooter.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

My top three things in Dover:
1. Walking up the slope to Crabble for a big game. Nothing beats it.
2. Walking along the cliffs to the lighthouse, having a coffee and a slice of cake before making the return journey.
3. Going to the castle and being amazed, every single time, that something so wonderful is on our doorstep.
Simple pleasures we all miss.
Forza Dubris.

I did prefer it when you could get into the castle grounds for free though

Yes. There were summers when we'd visit every day as kids.
