Wounded Seagull
- 22 September 2011 15:35127744Saw a seagull standing right in the middle of the seafront road this morning..totally rigid, not moving at all. Several cars came by and he still didnt move..so I thought eyup. Got binoculars to take a look and then noticed that his wing was completely broken.
Next car a long missed him by milimeters but it blew him into the side of the road. I checked later and he somehow had made it to the waters edge.
Thought I would take another look a bit later, as was on my way via motorbike to Morrisons. One needs to build up ones resistance with a series of tranquil meditations (with added yoga and pilates) before one goes to Morrisons as one inevitably meets the indigenous species that proliferates around here in the lowlands of south east kent. One often encounters the likes of Keefy Sansum or Brianie Dixon lurking in the vegetation, which can if not prepared give a chap heart failure!
However when I went outside the seagull had vanished. Where he went to gawd knows. I wondered if someone had taken him, but then an hour or two later I saw him again back in the same spot. Only to vanish permanently some time later again.
What to do in this case? I dont know if someone should be called or something, who would you ring..or do you just leave it to nature to take its course. - 22 September 2011 16:13127753Yes RSPCA, pity I wasn't nearer as I'd take him. I rescue birds here in deepest Essex. Have had a couple of magpie's, pigeons, a blackbird etc.

The thing is Jeane if their wings are broken like that, can they be fixed at all? can they make a recovery ? even if taken into care as it were....or are they just doomed?

- 23 September 2011 16:36127876I had the same experience last month but the seagull could not move its legs, I suspect it had been hit by a car. It was still there when I got home from work in the baking sun so put it in a box and gave it some water and soggy bread which it lapped up! Phoned the RSPCA but if you have means to take it to the vet they will not come out for it. They said my nearest vets that except these birds (as they are protected) was the one near the tip at whitfiled.
Off I went poorly bird in box flapping away. The vets were very friendly but from the look on their face I have a feeling the poor bird is now no longer. At least he/she had a peaceful end can't stand to see them suffer.Keeps politics to myself
