I think most of us would be happy to stay in the EU if it was for trade only + we would also need to trade openly with the rest of the world,and go back to the UK running itself.That is the only way that I might think about voting for it.But that will never happen.

I agree with both of you, the thought of no more stupid dictates from over the water is very appealing.

It is quite clear Brian...
I want out unless the EU is reformed or a deal is struck by which it is a trade only arrangement.
I think getting out is the most likely way it will end up with a Swiss style relationship being adopted.

The idea that the European commission will contemplate a revision of EU competence is sheer clap-trap on the part of DC, who is a deckhand on a ship heading westwards towards the East, direction "single European state" (see "the world is flat").
In fact it's not flat, contrary to the misguided views of the muttering deckhand arguing with the captain (Jose Barroso leader of the European commission).
The captain of the EU ship has flatly ruled out any repatriation of sovereignty to any EU member state.
"Any fundamental discussion about the renationalisation of EU competence 'was doomed to failure', Barroso said."

Alexander - ignore Barroso, he is playing a high stake game.
I do think our withdrawal is the more likely outcome but do not be fooled by posturing, when it comes to the crunch concessions will be given but whether they will end up enough for me and most Conservatives to go along with is another matter.

Concessions cannot be given, Barry, without unanimous consent of 28 governments of as many member-states.
Then they would all ask for concessions, each to their own measure.
We mustn't overlook that there are numerous third world economies in the EU with minimum wages at around 160 euro a month or little more. These are essentially banana economies.
One sneeze would bring them down.

Barry not just Conservatives and if we get a referendum with a straightforward in or out vote (which I doubt) the voters of all parties will have to be convinced it would be right for us to stay in the EU.

Some EU economies depend to a large extent on sending armies of pickers to Western countries, including Britain, to pick fruit during crop season.
What they don't earn that way, they get through the "£50 million a day" contract, whereby Britain and other Western countries pay each tens of millions of pounds a day to the banana EU economies.
Stop the £50 million a day payments, and recruit local people to work on farms, and within next to nothing the banana republics will start learning to grow and pick their own crops and to get a life.
They will be better off for it!
It's quite straight forward really, like showing a child that mummy doesn't need to change its nappies if it goes to the potty.
Bringing over hundreds of thousands of seasonal pickers to "the UK" each year is like changing nappies every day to kep banana economies afloat, and paying them £50 million a day is like spoon-feeding them.
We're not the only country that pays £50 million a day either, some others do too.
It's about time some countries in Europe were told to go get a life!

If so, why not bring back that true stalwart of a work-horse...the working horse? Do away with tractors and all the agri-diesel regulations and Red-Tape.
Just think of all the other advantages;muck can be spread as the field is ploughed, harrowed and sown etc. etc.

Well Ray, I read the report from the BBC and there was mention of a new model some time in the future. It seemed to be that this issue was analogous to that of the 'Mini'. Albeit that, as with the new Mini, the price would go up.
So it may be more a matter of cost than practicality.
