    Athenian hoplites were being sent out to fight for democracy, until they went to Sicily with the Athenian fleet, and an array of allies. Things were not quite as they had immagined, so they sent another contingent, and then another large naval force and army, including again many allies. But they later lost almost the whole expedition.
    Try reading Tucide, a contemporary of what happened, an Athenian and all!
