The small cargoship Eemslift Christiaan is berthed on the Eastern Arm at the moment loaded with wind turbine blades. I imagine that these are destined for the Thanet Offshore Wind Farm. Ramsgate harbour is currently the scene of major dredging operations to enable it to function as the construction and maintenance base for the wind farm. The hedge fund which originally conceived the wind farm proposal sold it on to the Swedish concern Vattenfall. Costs for UK wind farm construction have risen sharply as all the equipment has to be imported. Wind farms are no longer the cash cow they have been until recently and both Shell and BP have withdrawn from further involvement in UK wind energy. The arguments in favour of wind turbines in the context of combatting climate change are tenuous at best and it remains to be seen how much of the government's immensely costly plans for the construction of many thousands of wind turbines in the years ahead actually come to fruition.
