there is some blatant profiteering going on that will sully the reputation of the area.
some quick bucks for a few, hardly likely to encourage people to return in the future.

Supply and demand, unfortunate for those who want to stay here unconnected to the golf but it would happen wherever it is and for any similar event.
Fortunately the price of watching on tv hasn't gone up, and it's the best view

the law of supply and demand does not apply on the course, spectators are being charged 4 quid for a sandwich and 14 quid for fish and chips.
i am not saying that the royal and ancient golf club are racketeering but on another thread it was stated that the sandwiches all came from scotland.
an investigation into this should take place after the championships are over.

Yes we have put our room prices up this week. With the Swingate charging £400 and the Hog and Donkey £795 for a double room per night we would be stupid not to. It's no more profiteering than workers accepting double or triple time for Christmas shifts.
And how good is it for the local economy if people sell for £50 something guests are happy to pay £400 for?

That may be true John but Kent train fares per passenger mile are already more expensive than any comparable form of transport anywhere in the world.

Hope you are fully booked Peter. If Dover can't attract tourists when the Open is on it never will

We are fully booked. People are very happy to pay nearly triple our normal room rates for the experience of a lifetime i.e. going to the Open. We go the extra mile in terms of service and look after them like royalty. All year round we price our rooms at a level reflecting supply and demand at the time. That means in the low season rooms are going for £30. That is bare breakeven so we have to make ot up somehow. Anyone having difficulty with that must be an unreconstructed Marxist.

Howard, I'm sure supply and demand apples to both the entry fee and the cost of fish and chips while there (which must involve an element of the cost for the temporary facilities), the organisers will charge as much as they feel the punters are happy to pay.

once they pass through the gate they cannot leave the course.
the entry fee of £.60 is fair enough, people know that when they book they do not know what they will be forced to pay once inside.
play started today at 6.30 am, people will get peckish by the time play finishes at around 9 p.m.

Tom.
I followed your link, not sure what you mean about not Sounding Scottish?
I was referring to the addresses on the side of some of the catering van's, the last bit gave it away with saying "Scotland"

GaryC,
Yes, it quite difficult to see just who is behind it all from that page, but here is the link to the company who have the catering contract for this event and many many others...

Why, when they have branches throughout Britain, they do not employ local services I do not know.
It says, "China" on much that I own yet most of it is plastic.

Only just got their rooms ready for occupation. They phoned yesterday asking me to refer business to them if we were full. I sent them 5 people last night.
