Ah Tom, not just the colour, but the bore of the tubing. Brass Instruments like the Trumpet have a fairly constant bore size throughout their length until just before the bell, which flares out rapidly, they produce a slightly harsher "brassy" sound than Silver band instruments like the Cornet which have a slightly increasing bore size throughout their length and produce a more mellow sound as a result.

My own instrument is actually made of Hallmarked Silver, takes a bit of polishing, as are many of the instruments in a Silver band. Although the cheaper instruments are often made of an alloy.

I've been playing for about 37 years and have taught my own children plus about 9 or 10 other youngsters out at Eythorne. Together with Tony and Andrew who used to be in the band as kids and are now there as adults plus Norman who taught us the basics when we were kids we have been teaching and bringing young people through the Eythorne Silver Band for about 10 years now. Some have grown up, gone to university or moved away to work over the years but today we can field anywhere between a jazz quartet and a full blown 22 strong band only 6 of whom are adults, the rest are aged between 11 and 16/17.
