Over the last 30 years, people in our small village have helped to plant daffodils all round the village, on the roadsides and grassy banks. After 30 years, they look wonderful in the spring and have spread considerably. We have planted three red may trees in memory of people and events, now very attractive, more trees in the children's playing field, and trees planted which were won in the best kept village some years ago. These daffodils and trees don't need much if any maintenance.
Touch wood but the village has not seen much, if any, damage or vandalism. About twice in 30 years a bunch of daffodils was picked (for mother's day) by a child.
Without effort you don't get anywhere!
Unfortunately, hanging baskets and garden areas do need watering and weeding regularly and people's co-operation - some councils are very successful in this.
