Hi, this is Ed from Dorset. We've been wanting to move to Kent for a while and it looks like it is going to happen soon! Yey!
Although I'd like to think I know Dover, this is more like a tourist's knowledge which is pretty much useless when it comes to actually living there.
I would really appreciate if you could give me some pointers. We're looking for a friendly and quiet place. Without trying to sound disrespectful, we'd probably want to avoid council estate-type places.
What do you think about Tower Hamlets/Noah's Ark and thereabouts? The views are stunning but what is it like to live there?
Are there any particular places in Dover you'd suggest we avoid?

It might help if we knew the sort of premises you want to live in, the area you mention does not have large houses but is near to some schools.
I prefer not to mention the areas I would not move to given a choice as some of our members live there.

Hi Jan, thank you for your response. A terraced property is perfectly acceptable. The house doesn't have to be big but a good-sized garden and a nice view is a must. Schools are irrelevant. The reason why I like Tower Hamlets is that many houses have got a nice view and they're close to the Railway station. But that's as much as I know about this part of Dover.

Hi Edward Jan is right most of the properties in Tower Hamlets are small and only 5-10 mins from the Station,and of course they have the best Cllrs in Dover well me and the others in the ward.Properties there are among the cheapest and because there is really only one road in and out there is a semi village atmosphere I think.Tower Hamlets is really 2 separate wards each side of the Railway line but if you need any help let me know.

Ed from Dorset, do check out the traffic situation before choosing an area, as some parts of the town are adjacent to main roads, and it depends how much constant traffic you are prepared to put up with.

And don't pick Belgrave Rd or Howard will start posting pictures of your car.....
Seriously it seems to me some of the best views are to be had from Aycliffe and Victoria Park.

Given a choice i think i would go for either Elms Vale or River areas of Dover.They,re both nice places to live.

I agree AndyB and the top end of Folkestone Road is good too.
There are planning applications coming in soon (one is in and will soon come to the Planning Committee) for an area called Westmount off of Folkestone Road; the other one is further up the Folkestone at an area called Farthingloe.
Lovely countryside, close to the Western Heights and 5 minutes drive into Town, also conveniently close to (but not on top of) the A20/M20.
The applications haven't been passed of course, so it could be a little while before work starts.
The new Town Centre development is soon to be built and we all look forward to that.

Farthingloe and Maxton areas are also nice places to live but not so sure of Folkestone rd anymore.

Ed,
Have a look at the Westbury area, our house backs onto the hills, has one of the best views across town of the castle, has no passing traffic(it's a cul de sac) . a good corner shop and not that far from three pubs!

aycliffe has some stunning views as you do howard
i live in eaves road and by back garden view of castle and hills because im at top of a hill is stunning
each area has its own qualities

agree keith, i think the best views are going up melbourne avenue towards whitfield and there is a block off flats in rokesley road that have a fantastic outlook.
aycliffe of course has spectacular ones the hills behind and the sea with cruise terminal in front.

Another thing to think of is can you get to work or shops when the pavements and roads are icy, up a hill anywhere in Dover is a problem as only main roads are gritted. Living more or less on the flat certainly has its benefits.

the hills do actually get gritted though you wouldn't believe it after yesterday in my road. talking to our bus driver yesterday he pointed out that he could get up both hills easily but when he reached the top the flat roads clarendon place and mount road were too dangerous.
