Yes the Coastguard flyer. I was gazing out across the ocean blue yesterday and saw a plane skimming along the surface some way out, well I say skimming, he looked just about 100-200ft up. I said to myself that must be the Coastguard guy...and then I realised that I havent seen the plane in years.
Amazing how quietly and quickly these things stop. The chap pictured used to do a fly-by every single day. He was a bit of a daredevil pilot, a dab hand at making elaborate sweeping turns and so on which used to make the engine rev unusually...so you always knew he was there. Every flypast everyday he used pull inland to do a traditional sweep past the Coastguard station, in fact he used to buzz it. I bet he spilt many a cup of coffee over the charts up there. Gadzooks! there goes another cup of Columbian roast!
He also used to take part in the Dover Regatta and would rattle my window panes sweeping by. I must have plenty of pictures of him somewhere but this is the only one I can find for the moment.
I guess he was a victim of the cuts. Sad.
