speaking to one this morning and he said that as he was the only one left the idea was dropped as two are needed to go out together.
from what i can remember there are still 7 or 8 cruise ships to come.

That's such a shame Howard and as you say no-one there for the passengers of the MSC Lirica today on its last visit here this season
Deal have a good team of greeters all year round, I remember them on the station platform and around the town on the two occasions the Orient Express stopped there. I was very impressed with Deal's greeters, they were beautifully turned out complete with straw boaters.I have also seen them on many other occasions. They do Deal proud

Most things start off with great fanfare and great hopes and then (sadly) fade away quietly.
I still think that if done properly under the auspices of the Town Team, it could/would have been a success - maybe next year ?

yes it does sound like one of those great ideas not properly thought through similar to the summer bus service.

Referring to the reason given in post #1. I wonder why it was thought necessary that the greeters had to go in pairs were they expecting to get attacked by the tourists they were helping.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

There are still Greeters some orgainised by Visit Kent who meet booked visitors to the Town and the Dover Town Greeters who wander around the Town,I am a shift worker and have found that I am very rarely able to help on either, but I do try.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

Paul you've been a volunteer for so long-surely you realise that what you are referring to is apathy-it's a national past time. Volunteers come and go for various reasons-I'm lucky to have a steady team for the vessel-you obviously have one for the Heights. Greeters-yes a great idea but who? there needs to be some kind of pre reward in inspirational satisfaction or something. I was really hoping that localism would make a difference. Perhaps it will yet. (and that was nothing to do with party politics)

I don't go out to the Docks to greet tourists, no-one pays me to either!
But if I see a tourist in trouble, I always help out.
The other night one was locked out of his hostel and needed to phone the owner to open the door, as this wouldn't open when pressing the code.
Immediately I pulled out my phone and dialed the number he showed me, and summoned the owner to descend and open, which he did. It turned out that one had to barge the door open on pressing the code number, the door being somewhat old and stiff.
I explained to the tourist he was fortunate I had just enough credit on my phone, it was on its last pennies.
After the door was opened, I enquired of his provenance, which was Minnesota USA, and recommended he go visit the Castle during his stay. He said he would.
The other week, during the night, two forlorn tourists asked if there was a cheap hostel in town, so I accompanied them to the Castle Inn, where they got what they were looking for, at a reasonable price.
That saved them about 50 quid on standard B/B.

Paul, I never asked for money in return for my services to tourists, which came completely from the heart!

Posh Barry always does a good job as a greeter, he often used to direct hungry tourists to Blakes for lunch, for which sincere thanks.
