Howards photos are quite extraordinary. Dover appears to have given up trying altogether. Photos from yesteryear show a blaze of colour but no more it seems. Even the shell shattered wasteland of the Western Front gave birth to a canopy of poppies. Perhaps we should start up a new contest. Where other towns and villages vie for the best floral displays, such as Deal in Bloom, we could have our own Dover in Gloom contest. The recent photos of the bare earth in the Market Square were attributed to the beds lying fallow. Could it be that all of Dover is lying fallow awaiting the planting of the next potato crop? Sue told us that River was resplendent with flowers so perhaps the answer is to install little wooden direction signs in the forlorn flowerbeds pointing towards River and saying "Flowers this way 2 miles."
