The post you are reporting:
It is the simplest thing to slope off to the seedier parts of any conurbation and marvel at the architectural wonders that are past there best and in decline, to wonder at the narrowness of the streets and imagine how life was lived when all was bright and new, to "ooh-and-ah" and muse, "If only?!"
It is quite another thing to expect those for whom the surroundings, wondrous to behold when seen objectively, is home: Who know the place well and know too all the faults and failings, the inadequacies, the drudgery and have experienced the repeated and much heralded attempts and promise-laden declarations over the years to put things right that have come to nothing, to be at every moment 'chipper' in the face of what they know well and the (pardon the expression) 'arriviste', who's eye is filled by the new, knows not so intimately.
I, an outsider, too am able to be objective. Nevertheless I have learned that even the most gripe-spewing of the people on this Forum do have the best of intent.
'Tourist Guide' IS a job description. Not everybody has that that job.
