If someone volunteers for, let's say the Crabble Corn Mill, they're not going to be interested in the internal affairs of the East Kent Railway. Some groups work together (again EKR and Dover Transport Museum come to mind) which suits their own purposes.
As an ex volunteer at the Age Concern/Age UK shop I have an interest in several local groups. Incidentaly I thought Reg was referring to the volunteers not blowing their own trumpet as they were just getting on with the job without bragging about it.
Re employing local businesses employing other local businesses. I would only employ a Dover firm if what they promise to provide is reliable and the best value for money, most small firms can not afford to do otherwise or they will go out of business, altruism is only fine if you can afford it.
