Traffic was brought to a near halt today about mid day when suddenly into view came a horse drawn funeral procession. I think the procession must have come from the Port as I didnt notice it on Jubilee Way. Highly unusual to see such a thing on the main road from the UK's premier port. I couldnt help but think of Jeane as I think Jeane did show pictures of something similarly funereal a while back. There is a proper name for the horses and coach but it escapes me for the moment..
But here we are....
Horses in fine red plumage take centre stage on the dual carriageway
Followed by the main hearse
But oh..look at the traffic build-up. Nobody dared to pass it by. I wouldnt but would you??

Ah yes a beautiful coach hearse there, looks like my old mates T Cribb and son's funeral directors. As the horses have the red plumes it is probably a lady going on her final journey or, as there seems to be a plaque or something beside the coffin, it could also be military. How nice that they were met at the port (repatriation?) and taken to their final resting place in style.

I did wonder if the plaque was the name of the funeral directors but they don't normally put it close to the coffin like that

. I've heard of a W J Farrier. Similar hearse to the one I've seen.

Derek doesn't have the horse-drawn hearses at his place in London Road, he hires them in for the funerals.
They do look impressive - as Paul said, what a way to go.

There are only a few companies that actually have their own as they cost a fortune to buy, restore and maintain. Most of them are hired from a place in Norfolk (I believe) and many of their black horses are stabled here in Essex.
They are quite a sight.

This one went past my house at lunchtime, beautiful horses. A lady I know of used them recently for her husbands funeral because he loved horses so much when he was alive, she said he would have loved his send off.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".
