If you or your business have been affected by the new system there is an ePetition on the Canterbury City Council website:-

there was a piece about this on local news about a month or more ago and traders interviewed were of the opinion that it was important to protect the towers for the future.

They could have demolished the old public toilet building and rooted traffic around the tower.

Except that that is also listed grade II* and considered part of the city wall.

I think there needs to be a Canterbury Forum as well. Any ideas, PaulB.....

Ah indeed I would have liked that Peter but alas I think its too late in my case...old bones and all that..if only I was.. etc etc...
I was over in Canterbury several times recently and it is truly a very attractive place. I took a few pictures the other day, sadly I dont have one of the WestGate in question but cant resist putting the following one up. I really dont know much about Canterbury at all...this one taken from the bridge under the shadow of the new Marlowe theatre. Not sure if it's a canal or a river but here we go anyway.
Now that is a very English scene, almost painterly. Lots of little boats were being rowed by.. all with tourists on board.

There may very well be a Canterbury Forum but I raised the issue here because it is not just residents of Canterbury who are affected. Many of my friends who work in and visit the City live in the Dover area. The local traders say their takings are down 30%, there is gridlock around the Towers, nearby roads are used as "rat runs" and pedestrians are having trouble crossing the roads. If enough people sign the Petition CCC will have to hold a forum. Too many people moan about this and that and when given the opportunity to do something about it do nothing.
Splendid photograph PaulB. You should visit Canterbury more often but best to use the park and ride. Motorists are not welcome there.

And here is a pic of some people enjoying their punt down the river and waving away to us, taken same day as PaulB's pic above

And another, this time with a few more tourists on board smiling at us through our window at the Pizza Express restaurant. Pity we weren't being paid as greeters by Canterbury City Council as there were lots of boats with tourists waving to us all through lunch, Paul and I could have made quite a few bucks to pay for our meal

Springtime pictures like the above bring back hazy sunny schoolboy days
Jolly boating weather,
And a hay harvest breeze,
Blade on the feather,
Shade off the trees,
Swing swing together,
With your bodies between your knees,
Swing swing together,
With your bodies between your knees.
Thanks for bringing back good memories

Great one there Barry W-S...ah heady days of yore.
Did Colette breathe on the lens for dem shots of the jolly boaters? It used to be an old trick but dont tell anyone. Breathe on the lens and then take the shot...you inevitably get a lovely romantic glow...ermmm depending on the subject of course.

Lovely memories indeed, of years ago!! Not Canterbury for me, but the look and feel is the same. Nice one. Lovely pics.

I love the Westgate Towers and as I grew up a mile away from them they were a really iconic memory from my childhood. I hope they can be preserved but not sure the current solution they have come up with is the best one.
#7 PaulB I can oblige with photos taken from the recent Bridges Walk for the Stroke Association. Here are a few I took as we approached and went around the Westgate Towers. Unfortunately i never got far enough away to get a good straight-on shot. Never mind. It was a lovely walk.
The rest of the photos from the walk can be found here if anyone's interested.
