It's that time of the year already!
The Redoubt and Shaft will be open all weekend from 10:00 - 17:00. This year we will have Napoleonic troops all weekend with a battle on Sunday afternoon. WW2 soldiers will be patrolling the site. We will have civilian and military vehicles on site.
I'm not exaggerating when I say it will our biggest event yet. We have some new features this year including opening a brand new set of never-before seen gunrooms for the public to explore. For the first time the group have displays of 40s dancing throughout both days in the fort. Free guided tours outside of the fortifications are planned on both days. Many local organisations are putting on displays on the Grand Shaft Barracks site.
We also have a new natural world theme to the weekend. South East Kent Astronomical Society will be making sun observations from the Grand Shaft Barracks site and making an attempt to spot Saturn on Saturday evening. Also on Saturday night we are setting up a moth trap and will be bringing bat detectors to try and find some bats in the Redoubt moats. There will be some amazing insects at the Bug Roadshow on Sunday and visitors can meet both the Kent Wildlife Trust and the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership who will be doing a walk around the site at 12:00 Sunday.
In the main magazine of the Redoubt Viola films will be showing the first public performance of their First World War drama documentary 'Time Bleeds' all day.
Parking is available on the sports field at the Heights. A burger van will be on site and teas and coffees will be available at the Grand Shaft Shop.
All this, and more, just for £4 for the Redoubt. Grand Shaft is free. All proceeds go to preservation work.

Rather disheartening to find no-one has thought our event worthy of comment. Still, bumping this up - hoping to see some of you chaps this weekend.

Difficult to make a comment on something that has not happened Phil, that does not mean we are not interested and I wish you well.

Thanks Jan.
With some possible justification people have stated that the events have been a bit 'samey' in the past, but this one is much bigger and better, and that's not just PR guff. Our volunteers have opened up a brand new 1860s section of the fort, a caponier - one of the square sections that sticks out into the moat - that has never been seen before by the public. It contains lots of amazing graffiti from the 1950s and the only still working set of internal military doors.
That's an awful lot more to see and do on the Shaft Barracks site and we have multi-period re-enactors, not just Napoleonic. There is forties dancing during the day and more displays. We have wildlife and astronomy events going on up to 10pm or later. We've really tried to pull out the stops this year with new thingies to see and do. All for just £4.
Finger's crossed for the weather.

We're certainly reading, even if we haven't commented. Here's hoping it goes well!

Phil does most of his online stuff re WHPS on Facebook as the audience is much wider and generally doesn't answer back.

Well that is Phil's knuckles wrapped by Howard's remark, no wonder some members seldom post.
