Had a great afternoon up at Western Heights event . Grandson loved the re-enactment; well done to the Preservation Society, pleased to see it so well attended.

I would have to aggree with you Pauline,it was a great day, thank you to everyone who help get the site ready, also for all the people who were marshels. If I had one sugestion it would have to be ...a hand rail on the long steps,I know it all cost money, but being very unsteady on my feet & have to use a walking stick,it would be much better.
Pleae keep up the good work.

Yes, I guess they would be difficult if unsteady on your feet but as you say, cost is always so prohibitive. A lot of thought went into the event, one in particular was the handing out of ear defenders prior to the firing off of weapons during the re-enactment battle between the English and French. Grandson loved the bit where the English fixed bayonets and routed the enemy (us, the audience playing the part of the approaching French). Great fun for an 8 yr old (and his nan) whilst learning a smattering of history.

Always a good event one if not the one best event in Dover of the year,I can not make it this year first time we have missed it for some years now.Its seems by what is being said geting bigger by the year to and that must be a big help with funding as in post one it is a very big well done for all the helpers etc that put it on also all the work that goes on sun or rain all year round to keep it looking great for all the public that go up there.I also think after the new homes and hotel are up and running it will even be better with more funds coming in, but it is down again to all the unpaid helpers. So a very big thank you from the public of Dover and our vistors.

When my roll as a parish cllr comes to a end over the next two years I am hoping there will be a small part for me to play within this group,I have said this before but never found the time to do it,but I love it up there and the history hits you each time one is up there it is coming out of the walls hits you full in the face and as my pass shows that has been done to me afew times.

Here are a few pictures from our visit earlier today:
It's a shame the rain didn't hold off. Well done to everyone who was involved...

Thank you for all your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the event. I'll pass your messages on to the committee as they do not read this forum. Weather just held off today and although the number through the door was not a record breaker, the weekend was steady and worked with no major hitches. Seeing Saturn through the telescopes of the the South East Kent Astronomical Society at the Shaft Barracks last night was my personal highlight.

You will be please to know that Mr D Mckeen and myself put the bars in some years ago around the staircase.

I think the staircase alluded to is the very wide steps in the Drop Redoubt. Have I got that right?

Would you tackle the Grand Shaft with a walking stick and dodgy pins?
