    Vic, I agree. Standards need to be raised and maintained. However, we should also seek to do something about the unsocial hours element of their job. I'm not excusing getting drunk, but even Ms Blears admitted drinking in the Commons bar and then at another hostelry outside the House, because she was expecting to be working until the wee small hours. They are only human at the end of the day and surely entitled to bit of refreshment.

    Tell me th eport workers don't nip out for a pint or two. I used to work the 'shutdown' in Fords at Dagenham. The work was tough and hours long. At lunchtime the whole crew would go the pub and down maybe 3 or 4 pints, such was the loss of body fluid caused by the job. If it was okay for me, I don't se how I can dny others the same form of respite.

    We should think more before jumping on our soap boxes and condeming others perhaps.
