Today, 29th May 2012, is a day to celebrate.
If you are on average salary (about £24,000 pa) then today is the day on which you stop working for the taxman and start working for yourself. That's right, it takes nearly 5 months of your income to cover the tax you pay.
If you earn more than the average then I am afraid that you will be working for the taxman for quite a while yet.
Did you know that the Adam Smith Institute has been calculating these figures since 1963 when Tax Freedom day was on the 10th April!
Such is the intrusion into our lives of the taxman.

And this is just income tax. With the trend increasing towards indirect taxation it is the poorest who continue to pay the greatest proportion of their disposable income in taxation, all year long.

Tom - lets put this another way.
This year we have been working for 149 days for the Treasury.
In 1963 it was 100 days.
In other words the average earner is paying 49% more in tax.
Yes - 49% more.
Are we getting the value for that 49% more we are paying?
Far from it....

I would blame all of the parties but I got a big tax rebate recently.
