we have all heard the rumours but it is now official.
all, i repeat all immigration officers at the port are for the chop, just leaving assistant immigration officers will be used to interview people, but will not have the powers of the fully fledged immigration officers.
the 60 bed detention centre will be closed.
i suppose that if they are not going to detain anyone, there is no point to it.
every criminal on the run in europe and beyond will see this is an open invitation.
what do our local election candidates have to say about this?

This has got to be beyond madness; how can the Labour Government even think about considering this ?
It must be the end of Gwyn's chances of being re-elected.
I remember the very bad old days of the late 90's when thousands of illegals were entering the UK at Dover - buggered the Town for years; we can't have that again.
Who ever is doing this has got to be brain-dead. What advantage can there possibly be ? Saving a few thousand on wages, but costing millions on benefits and destroying Dover.

Howard you are promoting alarmist exagerations. If you read Bob's link, and that story is itself putting an extra spin on internal reorganisations, you will see that the forcast job losses for Dover are 4, not ALL, 4.
Obviously the appropriate unions will be concerned by any job losses and any cuts in this service are not to be welcomed but the situation is far from being the disasterous opening of the borders being portrayed in the press and furthered by this thread.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Nice to know that GP is standing aside while the folks he purports to represent are losing their jobs. Maybe if they were miners or seamen he would be a bit more vociferous in their defence. After all, it is the Government he is part of making these cuts.
Yep, LABOUR cuts, not Tory or LibDem cuts, LABOUR cuts.

I'm sorry, but Howard is 100% correct with this - ALL these jobs are to go. It's something I've known about privately for a while now, but for obvious reasons have been unable to pass on. I also know the distress it's causing for the people involved - plenty of heart searching and many worries for the future. It really is a very worrying time for them.
Frankly, it's the start of many such decisions involving public sector workers around the country. Of course the Tories won't reverse this decision if they get elected because they simply can't afford to - and the decision will be repeated the length and breadth of the country once the severity of the cuts starts to become reality. This is the real legacy of crass Labour economics, added to by the depth of the global recession, and it's going to get a lot, lot worse before any sign of improvement surfaces.
I heard a very sensible Tory politician saying that relocating Civil Service and other public sector jobs away from London (it being so expensive and all) could save the public purse £47 million per annum. That being the case, our Chamber of Commerce people need to get to Westminster the minute the election has been decided and start lobbying for some of those jobs to come to Dover. The time has come for the CoC to get in there, stop telling unimpressed ears that it means business, and prove it. With all these thousands of houses soon to be built at Whitfield, we have to find jobs from somewhere and if the CoC don't toss their hat into the ring, you can bet your bottom dollar that every other CoC from around the country will do.
True friends stab you in the front.
I carnt believe these jobs are being lost , its easy to knock labour for this so will the blues come on and tell us all the jobs will be reinstated ?

Mark UKIP would and 30% on top of that aswell.
Howard, you say 'does anyone seriously think that the blues will reverse the cuts if elected?'
Fortunately this is one part of the Civil Service which can stand up to cost benefit analysis.
Every removal of an illegal immigrant, over-stayer or worker in breach of conditions frees up either a job for the indigenous population OR reduces payments from the public purse.
The Immigration Service has had the necessary powers for decades. They have never had the political backing from MPs to use the powers that MPs have given them.

However, unfortunately, there is a new mode, or fashion, going about, Bob. Some people seem to think that it is unfair to restrict movement across borders, including between Britain and European countries, on the grounds that there is supposd to be in the near future a federal European state called "Europe".
