I was reading last night that the first, in-vision weather forecast, was transmitted on the BBC on 11 January 1954, and the weatherman was a gentleman named George Cowling, and it had, (maybe predictably), a very low accuracy. In 1962, came the fax machine and electronic computer which was a little more accurate. In 1964 came the satellite reports, which were of poor quality, but in 1973, along came a new computer and made weather forecasts twice as accurate as the first, (not very impressive sounding that, but never mind). Gone in leaps and bounds since then, but these days, I`m not sure if it`s just me, but I find that forecasts relating to this corner of the country seem to be much less accurate today than they did back in the 90s or earlier. Too much reliance on computer models in recent years perhaps, or a figment of my imagination? How do you all rate the weather forecasts of today?
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

I'm with you Colin; I find that most forecasts now are not particularly accurate. The long range forecasts are usually way out and even a day or two before isn't to be relied upon. I regularly check them for all the cemetery open days I'm doing (should I wear Victorian mourning dress if we are having a heat wave, do I need a covered awning for my stall if it's raining etc.) I now tend to rely on my eyes and ears on the morning concerned!

I think they are pretty accurate personally, however, we do seem to have our own micorclimate here in Dover/Deal which makes watching the weather forecasts a bit of a lottery. The old seaweed trick doesn't seem to work here as well as it did in Essex either.
For the annual carnival, I used to take extra precautions by doing a red indian weather ceremony, involving kinnikinnick, with a local "medicine man". We've all seen how good the weather is for Dover Carnival, so don't tell me it doesn't work!
