In Britain, a wealth tax has never existed, although the Window Tax of 1696 was a way of taxing the possessions of the wealthy.

Sky News reports today that the Liberal Democrats are now making clear they will not back the Tory Coalition partner on further spending cuts UNLESS there is a wealth tax in Britain.

Speaking from the party conference in Brighton, Nick Clegg said "a crackdown on tax avoidance by wealthy homeowners was the tip of the iceberg".

Currently, the LibDems are favouring a mansion tax to be paid on houses worth at least £1 million, but the Deputy Prime Minister announced that "the mansion tax is not the only way in which you can make people at the top make a fair contribution to this huge national effort of balancing the books."

So the cards are on the table, the LibDems are looking at various ways of making the wealthy contribute more to the Treasury, and so-by reduce the impact of Austerity on the masses.

Without this condition being respected by their Tory partners, there will be no more spending cuts!

If a law gets through Parliament regarding a Wealth Tax, this will be a precedent in British history, and if it doesn't, than we won't be seeing any more spending cuts during this legislation.

This seems to be the promise made by the LibDems today.
