This subject is one that I've had a passing interest in since my days as BUFORA's official illustrator many years ago. At one time utterly dismissive of the idea that aliens could ever visit us, I've always found the theoretical physics that could make such a visit possible very compelling. For example, the idea that a craft with a very high-powered gravity drive, capable of bending the fabric of space-time, is "in theory" a possibility but in "physical reality" highly improbable, but such a craft would allow visitors to travel anywhere in the universe instantly (even faster than the cosmic speed limit of lightspeed). Such a craft would also need to generate more gravity than the average planet in order to distort the fabric of space enough to render such a journey possible so would probably need an engine the size of Saturn or something. But who's to say some race of uber-intelligent beings out there haven't found a way?
But far more than this, I find the human aspect of UFOs and alien visitation the most interesting, especially the paranoia and conviction of conspiracy theorists and the ideas that a real, proven alien visitation could cause the collapse of established religions (any alternative or higher intelligence in the universe basically cancels-out God. If he made us in HIS image then who made the superior aliens?).
I love a good sci-fi movie, but do sometimes wonder how real aliens would affect human politics, religious institutions, and indeed our own understanding of life, the universe, and everything. How would it change us as a society? How would our technology change? Would we be better off with highly advanced aliens visiting us or would we become a conquered species of slave drones? Would, as conspiracy theorists suggest, all major governments really hide alien visitors and cover up the truth in order to maintain their own grip on power?
I have absolutely no answers, the whole subject only breed questions and more questions but it is really very fascinating.
