21:2272652did you want one?
irrelevant if you did not, everyone without one will have one installed in the next 14 months by veolia.
more than half the towns in dover already have one, a further 6500 will now be installed.

21:3172654Yes I heard that too Howard. How do they compare to not having one then? I've never had one, will I be paying more for my water or will it be about the same? Anyone know?

I think the answer is, if your sparing with water it's not a problem, but you will in the future have to keep an eye on how much you use

I think we all waste a lot of water, so instead of being wasteful, we will all have to watch what we use.
I feel sorry for the larger families of say 4 or 5 people in the home,

21:5872664in theory what keith says is true, my experience is different.
the first reading of my meter showed that i had used 1400 quids worth in a month, a check found that a pipe under my tiny front patch had a leak.
they repaired it and didn't charge me, a few months later the same again, they claimed that the leak came from the same pipe a few inches further along, cost me 100 quid to repair.
needless to say i came off of the meter and pay as to my rateable value.

22:0472666About two years we requested to go on a water meter. Since then we have had two rebates (one of £60 !!) and we pay half of what we used to pay monthly, which can't be bad. But we are careful with water. Use water from tubs for the garden and don't waste any if we can help it.
Certainly if there are 2 or less people in a house it will work out cheaper - unless as howard says you get an habitual leak !!

22:0772668quite right kath , i am on my own and should benefit from a meter, however with the chalk soil if we have a leak is not evident.

08:3972683We had meters installed at the house 7 years ago and at the business 5 years ago. Bills at the house came down by 70%, at the business by 40%. so it's not all bad unless you like to waste water. After all, pure water is a scarce resource which costs money to purify and distribute, so isn't it fair that you should pay according to how much you use?

09:3272684When our two boys moved out and it was just the two of us we had a meter fitted. Even though Maureen spends at least 20 minutes in the shower (it's therapy apparently) our water bill halved.
If you have similar circumstances go for it now, don't wait.

11:2172689Have they tried looking in the next door garden? I lived in a house where the main stopcock for next door was just inside my boundary fence.

11:3072692Within 5 years the full weight of the new sustainability legislation will be upon us! For those who are not aware please get up to speed as I believe that it ( like HIPS ) is badly thought out and will affect everyday life in this country. It starts now!
I am referring to the rules for new construction and extensions which will inevitably be applied to existing dwellings.
I can quote many examples but specifically with water we will be required to plan for using 33% less water each and progressively new houses will not be able to send rainwater into the sewer system but must have inbuilt recycling systems.
I dont disagree with the plan but the way it is being brought in with many other measures is plain silly! I could rant at length at how the governments ( any colour) are bringing in legislation that some clown in westminster considers fullfils EEC directives but isnt at all practical.
The major gripe I have is that Planning approvals are making a Sustainability Certificate a condition on all new dwellings. Ask where you get one from and you will find a whole new raft of consultancies being set up in house by Local Authorities!!! Fees for 1 house range up to £6000 on top of other fees already in place. Let alone the cost of complying with the rules.
The world has gone mad - or someone has - so water meters are the very thin end of the wedge - believe me.
