I am very tight on computer security. I run a full nightly scan for viruses, malware and spyware as well as having in place other security features such as firewall etc.
Because security is professionally so important and confidentiality vital I run an additional manual Spyware scan every week with some different software that is updated just before the 'run'.
I have just run this additional scan and I have found more spyware than ever before, 121 items found and deleted from my pc.
One in particular had 80 instances and was labelled: Fraud.Facebook.Messenger and is a 'trojan'.
I am no expert and do not know exactly how serious that infection was but it shows how important it is to run extra scans.
I recommend to everyone to obtain some extra anti-spyware software in addition to your normal antivirus and to run that regularly.
I use AVG (paid for) as my main anti-virus and malware protection which I find excellent and the additional anti-spyware I use is Spybot which is a free download and can be obtained from downloads.com along with other options.
You really cannot be too careful.

Further to the above. I have just Googled the trojan and it seems to be a very dangerous trojan that has only recently been detected and that is probably why it got through my first line of defence.
My updated Spybot found it and removed it though prior to today's update Spybot was able to detect it but not remove it. This underlines what I said above and the need for the extra scans.
Whatever you do get the software and scan your pc.

you're right there barry there are more and more attacks being made, every time one is detected another one rears its ugly head.
more a problem for you than me as your livelihood depends on your computer, with me i would just have the inconvenience and cost of getting another one.

Free anti-spyware software is a lot cheaper than a new pc Howard. What if some criminals use spyware to get hold of your details for id theft? Please take care....

Thanks for the heads up BarryW. I use Panda paid for) which is excellent. I use my pc for my writing and photography and learned the hard way about virus and Trojans. Now I run a scan every evening, as you say you can't be too careful - that and regular back-up's.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials on all our PCs. Touch wood, never a problem.....and it's free.
