20:1273446espied a poster in town advertising and open day for prospective busybodies, sorry i meant worthy personages to stand for the council.
didn't have a pen with me so cannot give a date and time(not on the d.d.c website yet).
the ad stressed that it was not necessary to belong to a political party, more important to have an interest in the area.
do any of our members fancy being a budding susan nicholas, john goodwin, roger walkden or dare i say it paul(fuhrer) watkins?

20:1673447HOWARD;
There are dangers with that advert, giving false imprssion that its that simple.
ask john goodwin, c precious, r walkden, p watkins
cost wise, getting leaflets etc paid for easier via a political party.
then theres the foot soldiers.
But that said,if its to give an isight it has to be good

19:4473564i thought the same keith, how can an individual really stand a chance of being elected as a councillor without any outside assistance.

08:5273598While I would never discourage anyone from standing, there is always a need for committed individuals with a passion for the town, there are things to remember not mentioned in the ads. Running will involve the whole of the candidates family and there is far more to it than just attending a couple of meetings a month. Anyone thinking of standing should attend a few council meetings first, just to get an idea of the public face. After that they should go through previous minutes on the councils websites and stop to consider the work behind the few simple lines, remembering that 'it was agreed' means a lot of discussions, paperwork and probably outside meetings to arrive at the 'agreed'.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

09:1473600Chris spot on .I was advising a lady who would like to be a councillor of all the things you have mentioned .If only it were just turning up at a meeting .
Im off to listen to the Cabinet members at DDC shortly .I find this very frustrating as I can no longer partcipate .
Still the odd sigh or facial expression can work .

09:2073604Being a councillor can't be that daunting or intellectually stretching...look at the bunch in power at present..not exactly the Stephen Hawkings of the political world. So any 'wannabees' don't be put off by those spouting forth above ..give it a go. It's passion and commitment that's required not one's ability to intrepret a balance sheet. They employ professionals for those areas.

This one we can disagree on, being a cllr is something that requires big considerastion.
Family life goes out the wndow
Social life goes out the wndow
24 hour expected on call from many
I hold my hand up to any one from any party or Individuals who stand for council.
its a real time committment.
When any new cllr came onto the Labour groups I always offered my help, advice they can take or leave as they wish.
Anyone considering standing would be useful shadowing a cllr for a few months
that would help to get an Insight.
That brings in both committee work and as Important the work in the community

I'm sure you will agree the political bit, is just that, a bit of what's done as a cllr.
Mr Precious and I chatted on this in town this morning.
I can see no reason why someone even dare I say It from another political background cannot shadow any cllr.
They may not agree with the views put forward, its about gaining knowledge from everyone.
I would have had no problem any person whatever background or political view shadowing me.
Could I finish by saying there are a number of cllrs from all 3 parties and the indies who do a good job
