rather surprised to see a group of people in drop redoubt road this morning, as far as i know it was not open for business.

Pass - it can't be a WHPS thing as I probably would have heard about it (I'll be rather annoyed if it is!). As you say the Drop Redoubt is pretty much out-of-bounds until Spring due to the bats hibernating at the moment, hefty fines for disturbing them. Maybe it was a English Heritage walk? I'm sure Paul will know.

it says rather a lot that we are all surprised that people actually go up the hills other than when there is an open day barry.
most people i see are local dog walkers and the odd coach that stops at st martins battery.

The Heights are quite a popular spot for walkers, in fact I think I recognise the guy on the left of the top image as one of the White Cliffs Ramblers

Just be thankful they weren't all carrying black bags to be dumped.

i can't remember the last time i saw a group of walkers, mind you it is a largish area.
the heights are very well signposted from the station so no complaints there.
if todays group walked a few hundred yards further up they would have seen the sights i enjoyed this morning.
