  Interesting subject I had an uncle that was on a Normandy beach when the first shot was fired, under his bed back in East London before the second one was fired.

  Upham VC was also the only man to be recomended for a second bar to his VC, it was turned down has it was felt that a 3rd medal would devalue the VC as a whole. A few years ago his medals were stolen but later returned after a payment was made, they were then presented to the nation of New Zealand.
