23:1582943Looking at the posting about the ladies sharing a car or walking to work together ( respect ladies ) I thought I would bring this one up.
How often is it we get snow like this? once in a blue moon as the saying goes.
An occupation I trained in and did for a while would have been very handy in this weather, like most things they say ( its like riding a bike ) and yes I would still feel comfy doing it after 30yrs
A Ski instructor.
I specialised in Down Hill and Giant Slalom, After coming home from Germany I sold all of my gear, helmet, ski's,boots and so on but I always get that feeling I shouldn't have. and it's on days like this I could kick myself.
Any one else trained in something useless?

23:2282945I trained as a florist in Harrods ending up doing the displays for windows and the other departments as well as arrangements for sale.
I never use my 'skills' now as I prefer pot plants to cut flowers.

00:0082960Ian you should talk to my dad sounds like you have a similar background you probably skiied together in the army. Definately not useless as his daughter he taught me to ski at a young age and schooled me to apply for snow queen every year of my own army career. Very useful indeed I had the time of my life. X

14:5083046Somewhere in my filing cabinet is my GPO telex operator's qualification which I earned in 1972. In those days the financial markets communicated mostly by telex. Anyone remember telex? For that matter, who remembers the GPO?

19:0583117i remember the telex very well, so many tricks you could play on it.
after making a bad mistake, type up a document, then dial up the number, cut off, play the document from the tape, dial the number again and cut off.
hey presto you have evidence that you sent the document in the first place.

23:5983163Telex and manual switchboard trained here too, buy a GPO trained operator who I relieved at lunchtime in the firm I was printing at from time to time.
Telex - Load a reel of 2ply paper and a dial by the side of the keyboard, you could type direct once the other side had answered with their ID number, but much quicker to have a secretary type it on the 'Wang' and get a tape cut to feed into the machine after dialling, then...whizz it would type madly to itself till message end.
Used to look forward to messages from far-flung places, one copy (red) went in my file while the black top copy went off to the person it was addressed to.
Switchboard - Had 25 incoming lines and 130 extentions, so could be quite fun joining up incoming calls answered by headset and a cord and plug into the line, then holding that cord whilst pulling out another to 'buzz' the extension and join them up - much more instant control than a digital pabx and you could see who was in convesation at a glance, butt into a call and dial international and also answer peoples directory requests from huge books full of telephone numbers kept there.
Used to get some oddball callers sometimes and some downright rude ones too, many of whom should have known much better (names witheld!).
Happy days
