Super conservative Mitt Romney's visit coincided with the worlds media being here for the Olympics. Unfortunately for him, prior to arriving on these shores, he bungled it at the eleventh hour on American TV, by making uninformed criticisms. These statements of Olympian concern were made in an effort to create the impression that he actually knows what is going on..as in general terms these guys know nothing at all about the UK or indeed most foreign nations. American politicians as a rule are navel gazers.
They make these visits in order to appear at one with large sections of the voting communities at home..always nice to be seen in the UK where they have all those nice red soldiers and nice old castles...and even a queen or two! Nice to be seen in Israel too as all that Jewish vote and Jewish dollar support is not to be sniffed at. Sniffff snifff!
And now.....Here's Mitt...
The bizarre thing at the moment is that Mitt seems to be running very close to Barack Obama in the polls and could spring a surprise. The contest for the White House has entered its last 100 days so the heat is on..hence these foreign trips. But Mitt alas alas never looks quite so assured as Barack...appearing lately to be extremely bungle and gaff prone. These foreign trips shows their weaknesses. Mr Obama himself was considered weak on foreign policy, he improved in office, but nevertheless under his Democrat realm we have seen a pulling in of american horns on the world stage...sadly...when we could have used more help in Libya, and Syria is crying out for it currently. Why should they be the worlds police??...I dont know, but they always were.
The Republicans ( Romney in this case ) were always a tad more 'gung ho' in their foreign policy and I suppose we all benefitted. This time around however I am putting my money on more of the same, on Barack Obama for a second term, but it's going to be close.
