    WHPS PRESS RELEASE:

The Dover Western Heights Preservation Society are proud to present their Spring spectacular Open Weekend on 21st and 22nd May. The Drop Redoubt fort and Grand Shaft staircase will be open from 10.00 – 17:00 both days. We will have displays of drills, a period camp and a cannon will be firing from the fort.

On Sunday afternoon we will have a Napoleonic battle with a marauding gang of French soldiers who somehow made it to Dover. Throughout the weekend we will have fascinating displays of arms, equipment and drill from British soldiers from both the World Wars.

We now have a new room in the fort open to the public. After a great deal of hard work by our volunteers, we now have the floor restored to its original level in the cells. Come and see a Victorian army uniform, bed and kit in this new area for the first time.

The weekend will not just be focused on history. The Dover Museum and Arts Group will be putting on some creative art displays reflecting World War One, and the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership will be on site to talk about the local environment. Greg Esson will be bringing along his telescopes during the day on Sunday to show us amazing images of the sun from the Grand Shaft Barracks site. Dover Tales will regale us with an amusing play on Saturday afternoon.

Our special guest star on Saturday will be actor Jason Salkey, Rifleman Harris from the Sharpe television series, who will be with us to tell you tales of filming the great series and sign autographs and posters!

The weekend will be just £5 for adults with accompanied children free. A café will be available in the fort for refreshments and a shop will be selling books and souvenirs. Parking is available on the Sports Field on Citadel Road.

All monies raised will be put towards preserving the heritage for future generations. Come along, we guarantee you’ll enjoy a Big Bang or two at the Heights! More details to be announced.
