Yes indeed Howard. I did comment...
First off, there needn't be loads of unemployed shop staff. We could return to the notion of 'service', with a smile. If you can earn peanuts stacking shelves why not earn as much or more by serving the shopping public?
What is so convenient about the pressure to have as few people employed as is (in)humanly possible?
A Scrooge is not somebody that rails against consumerist Christmas, but is rather s/he who knows well the cost of something and the value of nothing.
A neighbour, whether they be a shop assistant or not, is not just for Christmas.
Let us remember the unfortunates of a true Christmas, those like Doctors and nurses, Police and Fire personnel, the only ones required to work over the holidays, and let everybody else enjoy one of the few times when families can be together?
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

I always remember the time I got a pair of hand knitted purple bedsocks, I was in my 40's at the time.
This year for the first time ever I am only buying presents for the family, being retired even from voluntary work is great.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Ooh! I'll bet he will appreciate that or maybe a collection of football programmes
I remember getting nothing but socks and 'Brut' aftershave for Christmas when I was 13, I was gutted, t'was a bit of a change from what Santa delivered the previous year - an Action Man Diver
