10:2586629i bet most of it is people moving house and "forgetting" to tell the council their new abode.

17:3886674I'm sure I've read reports that around 98% of Council Tax has been collected, similar %age for Councils rents.

23:0786711Nothing new there, it had happened as long as council tax has been collected and it a %age of non-collection is built into the calculations. There is always going to be an element where people go awol, leave the country, DIE, etc and is not cost effective to persue......
Been nice knowing you :)

23:1786713Do we know the time scale of the £32m, is it multiple years?
It looks like the overall KCC element is about £550m and I think you need to add 40% to that for local councils, parishes, police and fire so £770m per year all together, so even for one year that is a 96% collection rate so that is probably about right for a year

This reports £21m over one year so that make the rate above 97%+

18:0286790I saw the end of a news item about this on breakfast tv. I think someone being interviewed was saying that quite a bit of the non-payment could be down to people who can't afford to pay but haven't claimed benefits due to them which could help.
So at this level of collection if the council could identify them, by a combination of them claiming benefits to enable them to pay and the allowances available to them reducing the amount due, the council could pay out more and collect less yet still have a better collection rate. Then the missing dosh would just be down to the deliberate evaders and 'administrative drift'.

18:1986795this is often forgotten when we talk about the benefits bill.
for every evader there is someone that is entitled to help but doesn't know it or is too proud too claim.

20:3686804i have always harboured suspicion about the information given in some of the f.o.i requests.
surely in some cases their are two files, the real one and the one made public?
