  I agree with Helen, compassion is needed. But that does not exclude the setting of boundaries, in fact it demands it. I have sympathy with people on their uppers or experiencing social or health challenges and recognise that there is a hairsbreadth between us. I also recognise that behaviours can be managed and expectations made clear, and not to do so is not doing those guys any favours.
