Graham. This has all been covered so many times on here on innumerable different threads that there is really nothing new left to say. The viable alternative, from UKIP or anybody else, is for the port to remain a Trust Port. All income in excess of day to day operational expenses is thereby devoted to modernisation and expansion. Any form of privatisation necessarily requires that a major portion of this income has to be diverted to service the immense sum required to be borrowed to purchase the port.
Despite repeated enquiries, the advocates of privatisation have never satisfactorily explained how this anomaly can be resolved and have always resorted to harrumphing about medieval charters and other such nonsense. My personal favourite was when one of these Masters of the Universe claimed to be the living reincarnation of Christopher Columbus and Winston Churchill, whom he optimistically and mistakenly surmised would be fervent supporters of privatisation.
