Well, we had a small committee meeting last night, the first under the new chairman (me!), and I have to say that I'm inspired by the drive and passion of our committee. We have plenty of work to do, some of which involves an amount of morale building, but I came away really impressed with the guys at the top of our local branch. I hope that we can get our message to a younger audience and attract younger members with that - it won't be easy, but there is a strong will there, and where there's a will there's a way.....
I must have missed the story - either I'm an ostrich or workload meant I didn't look at the news when the story broke - but I'm appalled to learn that the UK has been fined £150m for not flying the EU flag in EU-funded development programmes display boards. £150m - 150 MILLION pounds; if that's not a prime example of the EU shafting Great Britain and classic overreaction to mind numbing bureacracy, what is? Does it not show contempt for this country, and for common sense, at a time when every penny really does matter?
Just occasionally I find my own resolve at wanting out of Europe tested - am I being, as Sid contemptuously calls me, a 'Little Englander'? Then this sort of nonsense raises its ugly head and I answer my own question by saying that if I am, it's better than being EU sheep fodder. £150m for failing to show a flag; it beggars belief even amongst EU ideology, in itself a test of one's sanity.
