Sid, You`re probably one of many europhiles that consider peace in Europe is all down to the EU. This is a common misconception and yet another part of their propaganda.
If the EU were only about trade and cooperation between truly independant democratic nations, and nothing more, then it would certainly help to keep the peace. However, with it`s agenda for central control over everything and its remote, secretive and undemocratic way of operating, the EU is more likely to be a source of conflict. Artificial federations eventually break up in turmoil just like the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.
The main reason for the peace so far is the presence of NATO and US forces stationed on the East German border and the nuclear balance.
Independant democratic nations rarely go to war against one another and I don`t see how the EU can take any credit for that.
