  Thanks Dave for the fuller explanation, and of course you are almost totally correct. However, MC was not the beginnings of English legal history, but a landmark moment in it. I might be wrong, but the writ of habeus ciorpus is about the only remaining clause, although introduced because John had a habit of locking up those who disagreed with him until such time he got bored, they died or were bumped off. The vicitms were usually upper social strata, not mere plebs like us.
