Barrie, a debate ideally should be over an issue, or issues.
But so often, it degenerates into tit for tat shouts, such as in Parliament during question time,
Often it submerges into deriding a party or a person in its - or their - entirety, rather than discussing the actual ISSUE.

Sometimes happens on the Forum too.

It's ALWAYS better to have a superior Cause, a Faith, that is above politics, because one will also need it.
Detractors will go for a party or a specific person come what may, rather than actually DISCUSS an issue.
They'll make you talk in circles pretending not to understand what you said 1,000 times.

Advice: keep out of politics unless you are fully in possession of your nerves, and have a place to retreat to where NO-ONE with an obsession can reach you. A detractor's aim is usually to do your nerves in.
