There is much UK technology onbaord each space shuttle that lifts off. There is also a decent amount of hardware and software provided by UK scientists. As Colin rightly says, we need to do this to give ourselves the chance of a better future.
As a matter of interest, I am walking around with a device in me that is a direct bi-product of the space industry which keeps an artery open. and my kitchen cupboards contain non-stick pans. Two industries generated from space programmes that would not have even been dreamed of at the outset.
I am very pro the UKSA, ESA, NASA and whatever the Ruskies have, and watch Indian and Chinese probes with interest. However, I believe we must only do what we can afford. As an aside, I think the Willetts bloke a bit of a burk, but that's just my long held opinion.
