19:0428099According to this evenings news the population of Britain has crashed through the 61 million barrier.
The experts say that it is not due to immigration but due to a baby boom.
I would say it is a baby boom due to immigration.
Comments.?

21:0228102you are partly right ian, for the first time in ages new born babies have outnumbered new arrivals in our fair land.
about half were born to mothers born outside of the uk.
our betters will tell us that we need new people to be born , then grow up, and pay for the pensions of the growing older population.
wonderful logic.
i have been banging on for ages about the number of people living in a country that only has limited resources.
it matters not where they come from, we simply have too many people on our island.
it is now over 61 million, with forecasts of it rising to over 70 million in the future.
the issue will never be seriously discussed.

21:3528107Thankyou for the sensible comments Howard.
I did raise this subject on the old forum and if I remember rightly the thread ran for quite a while.
As an island as small as we are, how long will it be before we run out of space, lose all of our green land and at the same time be able to support ourselves?

you know what will happen, build on more flood plains, blame teachers for getting poor results from overcrowded class rooms, pick on the health people for waiting lists getting longer etc etc
the same problems are occuring in belgium and holland with the same frustration.
i think it was roger who said some time back, that to broach the subject of immigration was tabboo and tantamount to accusations of racism.
in your last paragraph you mention about the loss of green land, this issue has been raised by our superiors.
we are seeing a lot of farmland lost to housing developments due to the burgeoning population, we are for the first time in a position of not being self sufficient with food production in the event of a serious world wide problem.

07:0028118HOWARD/IAN
I have no idea what the history ie numbers over the years is, but im sure we have always had immigration in this country,
We have struggled to cope with a good policy on immigration for many a year going back even to days before the present Govt.
I think whenever we enter into debates such as these we end up getting into the
SEND THEM ALL HOME speeches.
Which will never be the answer, nor should it be.
We need a constructive debate, but thats always doubtful

17:5428131you have confirmed the point i raised keith.
no constructive suggestion from you.
incidentally, you have completely missed the point, the issue was overpopulation not immigration.

19:0828133Keith.
The idea of this thread was not to raise a political issue or to shout send them all home, you always seem to turn a thread into something we are not talking about.
The Idea of it all was to chat about our overgrowing population, our resources and where we will end up.
we don't need Tory, Labour or any other party mentioned thank you.
Howard.
when you think about what we are being told, what do you think the outcome may be in say 20 to 30yrs. ( when were not here ). where do we put everyone?
No more green belt or brown land, quite worrying realy.

19:3628142i do not believe the problem will be addressed ian, too much of a hot potato.
politicians will avoid it, because they are judged on immediate results, elections are every 4 or 5 years.
we do not have a statesman/woman that will look forward and decide on an unpopular measure that would turn out to be correct in the 20 years time.
perhaps our leaders will stop encouraging us to give up drinking and smoking, taking more exercise and eating muesli each night for dinner?
if a few of us do the decent thing and croak a lot earlier, some of the problem may be alleviated?

20:0928144Since man first put his foot on the moon the population of Earth has doubled.
Normally nature lends a helping hand like sending in the Plague or a dose of the Spanish Flu to reduce the pop.
We had high hopes for Aids but that seems to have dwindled (thank God) maybe Swine flu will rear its ugly head again only this time more powerful and kick 20 to 30 million of us into touch.
Lending nature a helping hand are todays young Binge drinkers, drug takers and Fast food fatties coupled with the joyriders and the occasional war somewhere which will see off a fair number of yougsters.
So all in all Ian thee shouldn't have too much to worry about lad....
