Harry, I agree with you on that as we have a similar problem in Lydden with HGVs being directed through the back lanes by dodgy satnavs, but I don't think it's as simple as putting up a sign, it would probably be necessary for an Order of some sort to be made to put that limit on a road - so coming off the A2 into Lydden down Coldred Hill which in places isn't even wide enough for two cars we just have an 'Unsuitable for Long Vehicles' advisory sign not an enforcement sign.
Vic #19, the standard is TD 69/07 Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, 2007, which was an update of the 1996 manual, so the standards have been there for quite a while - also explains how the laybys on the A2 Canterbury bypass are even less up to current standard.
