seen a few of these around town proclaiming the excellence of various establishments, a marked difference in what trip advisor think and what ddc found on their inspection.

Based on people's views when having eaten. Not about conditions as to how the food was prepared. There should be an obligation to show the official rating in the window.

Yes it should be compulsory to prominently display the council rating.
The Cinnamon Island entry on Tripadvisor, worth reading 'Vegetarians beware' at the bottom of page 1.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Yes Jan. Isn't the English language wonderful.

i would love to know how these reviews are checked, surely the restauranteur, family and friends could post the rave reviews under a variety of names?
from the other point of view the chap that was "sick as a dog" could have run a rival establishment.

That does not matter much Howard. The graphic on the right of the tripadvisor page has no scale applied to it, it looks as if the food is as good as the atmosphere...not a lot to go on.
I seem to remember that when this matter came up a while ago it was entirely voluntary whether the establishment displayed their grading, the argument being that those who don't show it would be judged accordingly, but this Tripadvisor Notice comes close to passing itself off as the real thing.

well spotted tom, the notices are almost identical meaning that a lot of people will assume that everything has been rigorously checked.
interestingly i saw the same notice outside another restaurant saying the same and again not the ddc one, when i checked the council had given them high marks.

Can I take it that those eateries that have supplied a photograph are the only ones to be taken seriously?

Then there is this...

Mayhap it is time to co-ordinate the official ratings with the official Tourist Information?

I have a problem with Trip Advisor in as much as any given business is open to subjective opinions in a public place which is very open to abuse and sabotage. Problems reported where squabbles have resulted in unfair critiques are commonplace and I do think the whole system is not necessarily as good as at face value.
True friends stab you in the front.
