I don't have a lot of experience of Travellers except for what I see reported on the news. The filth and litter is enough for me. However, last year I went to look at a cottage for sale in a local rural village, expecting it to be in need of major repairs as it was so cheap. On arrival at the cottage in a lovely quiet area it was obvious it was in good order but then I turned around! Just yards away behind a 7ft mesh fence was what can only be described as a 'tip'. Caravans in total disarray, broken furniture, mattresses etc. strewn everywhere, filth, rubbish, dogs - everybody's neighbour(s) from hell. We left hurriedly and I later went on line and discovered that it was a designated Traveller site; the name of the co-ordinator was given with contact details. I would imagine to go on site you would have to be accompanied for your own safety whether you were a postman or the police. I later learned the elderly owner of the cottage was having to move to a Nursing Home but the likelihood of them ever selling the property let alone getting a fair price was pretty remote. If those whom made the rules or had designated the area for the site, had to live within yards of it, controls would be more vigorously enforced.
