just something to worry over.
PLANS to move sensitive Government computer work offshore could leave millions of Britons open to fraud and identity theft.
US giant Hewlett Packard, which has a major contract with the Department for Work and Pensions, wants to shift 200 IT support jobs to India from Newcastle, Sheffield and Lytham St Annes as part of a cost-cutting drive.
If Ministers allow the move to go ahead the details of millions of benefit claimants, including pensioners and those receiving child benefit, with names, addresses and bank accounts could all become available to staff in Bangalore.
The decision by banks to move jobs to India has already led to widespread fraud and identity theft. In 2005, it emerged that bank and credit card details were being sold for as little as £3 a person by subcontractors in India, enabling criminals to raid the accounts of Britons or clone their cards.
North Tyneside MP Mary Glindon who is campaigning against the move, said: "Once it goes abroad, we have no control over it."

I actually agree with the MP can't recall which major company it was, but they sent a lot of there work out to India, and it was so bad they had to bring it back in house.

Corrupt or not, this is a very bad move if it gets approval. I would have thought it needed the Government to agree to it, so hope they don't.
Saving money should be secondary to saving people's personal details.

seems to be a classic case of our betters knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing.
perhaps we should just publish our credit and debit card details online and get it over with?

To play devil's advocate I suppose it depends what the jobs are but I would not have thought it was the way for Hewlett Packard to renew any government contract where security is all important.

Remember not so long ago, many important documents, cds and laptops were left on trains and in taxis etc. where millions of people's personal details were lost - and many of them were (Labour) Government ministers, so it's not the preserve of one government to make silly mistakes.

This topic is about Hewlett Packard, we are not talking about silly mistakes made by any government employee so no need for political point scoring Roger.

I wasn't trying to make political point Jan, just pointing out that any government have ministers who lose people's personal details and this scheme is (potenially) in the same league.

Sorry Jan, I wasn't hitting any ball back to anyone; I hadn't noticed Keith's comment - I'll take a look at it.
Yes, I've read it now and can see that it would have looked like I was knocking it back to Keith.

Basically this sort of transfer of OUR personal details to an overseas handling service should NOT be allowed. I don't remember voting for any govt that advocated this type of decentralisation - London to Liverpool (mind you...

) is just about acceptable but London to Lahore is a no, no.
Had any party put this on their manifesto it would have resulted in a resounding defeat and rejection by the electorate.

Technically I can see no problem with it - I am sat at home at the moment working on sensitive data, nothing is held on my home PC I am remoting securely to servers where all the data is held in Ashford. This could be the same if I were in Newcastle or India....
Been nice knowing you :)

that is what the banks said when they relocated their call centres to india.
nothing can ever be 100% secure on the internet there will always be unscrupulous people with the skills to gain access to information.
wickileaks are a prime example of the weakness of web security.

I do like Marek's comment that India is a country rife with corruption, unfortunately I think India may think that about Britain.
