I note that the present Government is still keen on extending the HST link to the Midlands and then beyond. Apparently this is going to cost a small fortune! Why?
If you look back at the growth of Canals and Railways in the UK historically they were dug/constructed/erected by gangs of labour (many imported from Ireland).
Surely with a large out of work workforce there must be some of them able to push a wheelbarrow?
Why are we not digging mega-canals (as the French have - which can also redistribute water from the wet North to the dry South - + provide 'green' transport for goods) and putting in a half decent railway infrastructure?
